The term fibromyalgia is derived from three words – “fibro” is a Latin word meaning fibrous tissues such as tendons and ligaments that connect bones to muscles and bones respectively.

The middle part “my” is derived from the word “myo” meaning muscles.

The word “algia” refers to pain.

The word literally means pain in the fibrous tissues. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of multiple symptoms rather than just pain.

A very real imaginary problem of hypochondria and psychosomatic symptoms. Recent numbers show a diagnosis of 2 percent in the United States alone. Most cases being in North America with no real recognition in many other developed/non developed countries. Most people with fibromyalgia are women (about 80 - 90 percent.) There is no medical way to diagnose fibromyalgia, it is a relatively new diagnosis in the medical field and believed by most in the field psychosomatic.
Bolstering this view is the fact that patients with fibromyalgia often suffer from anxiety or depression. And some patients who suffer only from a psychiatric disorder may develop somatic symptoms that mimic fibromyalgia — yet the primary challenge is a mental health problem, and symptoms will abate only when it is addressed. For all these reasons, the best treatment involves a team approach that includes mental health clinicians. Lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders is even higher in those complaining of fibromyalgia.
There is a widespread skepticism in the medical practice of whether fibromyalgia should be deemed a manifested physical diagnosis.

Fibromyalgia is a secret code amongst health care workers meaning "you're a worthless sack of shit, please go away."

A very real, painful, debilitating illness that should not be in any way joked about. No one should have ever included a definition of it on this website meant for jokes.
Fibromyalgia is NOT A JOKE.
There have been definitions posted that display the stigma that real sufferers deal with. Fibromyalgia is not an excuse not to work. It is being in so much pain and suffering such heavy fatigue, as well as a slew of other symptoms like stiffness, depression, headaches or migraines, dry eyes, incredibly sensitive skin, and many more. The pain is widespread and feels like the deep muscle aches from the flu, growing pains, shin splints, stabbing, burning, like your bones and veins hurt, and more.
900,000 known Canadians suffer from this and 10 million in the U.S.
There is no cure and no adequate treatment. It takes most people a long time to get diagnosed. It is not itself a fatal illness. The danger is the risk of suicide from suffering constantly with no relief.
What’s written in some of these definitions about sufferers being hypochondriacs, bogging up the medical system, or complaining about ‘normal aches and pains’ that others work through are wildly false. It is harmful for this kind of stigmatized information to be available for anyone to read, spreading the stigma that seriously affects lives.
Amanda has fibromyalgia. She lives in constant pain all over her body and never wakes refreshed. She has tried everything she can to get relief. She is a hard worker and loves working, and it kills her to not be able to have a job. She found the horrible definitions posted on this website for her illness and is furious. She wants anyone laughing to know that the cause of fibromyalgia is not yet understood. This could happen to you or someone you love. And with that attitude, this illness will eat you alive.

Fibromyalgia is a disease for the bone idle malcontents to screw money from the government in the form of disability. All Karen’s have it and all Sharons wish they had it.

Literally: "muscle pain" A diagnosis made in the absence of pathology, i.e. the antithesis of disease. Normally - but not always - presents in older, obese women who are unsuccessful at some aspect of their life - sexual, financial, career. It is a real phenomenon - but it is the somatic expression of depression, not a physical disease. Commonly treated, unfortunatley, by narcotics. Counseling and therapy would be better.
How come your mom's on disability?

She has fibromyalgia, so her best friend is morphine.

A life-sucking, soul-killing disease. You feel sick enough to cancel dinner with your friends, but not sick enough to miss work. Symptoms are similar to the flu: fatigue, body aches, fevers (they come and go) and major brain fog. The symptoms can flair up without warning, which makes planning ahead impossible. No known cures. Pain medication can help, so can yoga, swimming and meditation.

There are several theories as to fibromyalgia's cause, including pollution, aspertame, sick buildings and more. There are several snake-oil "cures" out there; it pays to be cautious.
Last year I was going to the gym five days a week, working all day, attending graduate school at night and taking care of my husband and house. Today I count myself blessed if I can make it through work without a pain pill--all because of fibromyalgia, a disease most people don't believe exists (such as in the prior entry here).
