Okay, so there are two very different definitions for the label 'emo'.

First version (usually used by non-emos): Emos are attention seekers who live regular lives like every other teenager in Britain but cannot handle the strain as well as everyone else. They say that they are individuals, yet listen to ‘emo music’, hang out in ‘emo groups’ and buy ‘emo clothes’ with their pocket money. They hang out in dark rooms generally ignoring the happy things in life and talk about how depressed they are all the time. Most lie about cutting themselves in order for people to feel sorry for them without actually experiencing any pain at all. Others do it as an ‘initiation’ ceremony in order to become fully emo. ‘Cutting’ is a fad – what on earth does it help? You feel sad, so you cut yourself to make you feel… better? They don’t appreciate what they have, and do not realise how bad other peoples' lives are in comparison to their own. Emo is just an ever-increasingly popular ‘group’ which people want to be part of. It is a group for kids without an identity, looking for a bit of melodrama and ‘deeper levels of understanding’. To be honest, the kids who REALLY have a life not worth living aren’t even in the emo club – they just try to get through each day until it gets better.

Second version (usually used by TRUE emos – i.e. those who actually have a reason to be depressed): Kids who have had the misfortune to go through circumstances which are incredibly depressing. For example, parental divorce, death of a loved one, and loneliness. They listen to music which explains how they feel, enjoy hanging around with people who understand how they feel, and buy clothes that express to the world about how they feel. Only some kids cut themselves. Cutting can become addictive, and it distracts from the inner pain. It can be hard when youre labelled in the street because of what you wear, and can sometimes make depression worse. Being a ‘half-emo’ can also mean that you just like black and emo clothes and haircuts, and enjoy gigs and mosh pits. Some people that you like because theyre genuinely nice people, could be emo, and fun to hang around with.

Nearly every single teenager has wanted some form of attention or feeling of belonging at some time or other, and being emo could be the solution to some. Don’t hate people because of what they are labelled. Get to know them – they may be more like you than you think.
Person: 'Hey dude, look over there, some damn emos with their black hoodies and weird hair... jeez man theyre such attention seekers'
Friend: 'Err... you own a black hoodie, and all they've done is grown their hair long, man.'
Person:'Umm... oh be quiet, fool'

Cheerleader:'Oh my god, that girl is like, SOO weird - she is like, always DEPRESSED and shit!'
Friend:'Weren't you crying on the phone to me the other night because your boyfriend dumped you? You seemed pretty depressed then...'
Cheerleader:'Oh shuttup'

See "Fag", "Faget", "Pussy", "Pansy", and my favorite "Suicidal Retard".
"Look at those Emo Fags over there, Johhny!", Johhny's Mother said.

Johhny replies, "Eww! Mother, Why are there such people on Earth?"

"Because America sucks ass and no one has common sense or a sense of humor anymore and people fuck their cousins." Replies Johhny's Mother.

"OH! Now I understand!", Says Johhny.

"No Johhny, no one understands... No one.", Johhny's Mother explains.

Right i've had enough of this bull shit!. If you all think that so called emo's are attention seekers and that they're lives aren't tough then i've got something to change your minds. A few months ago my frinds mum left home deciding that she didn't love my friends dad anymore and she is the only girl in the house now and so she has to bring up her brothers care for them and her father, clean their clothes and do all the work around the house and look after their many pets. And she still goes to her college and goes to work and then has to come home and do more.I am her only real friend.
Yes she did cut herself at one point and she listens to rock music because the lyrics pull her through all the shit life throws at her and she can relate to the music and if you think about it the reason why so called emo's listen to rock is because the lyrics are about things that effect the so called emo's like self harm, family trouble, and love. Instead of all that chav music which is about killing other people. A lot of teenagers have jumped on the band wagon and called themselves emo's but if you ask them the real ones never actually wanted to be called that at all they just wanted to deal with things their own way. i think you will find that the majority of these kids are having family trouble and i agree with definition numer 45, could you cut yourself just for the sake of it.i've cut myself before when i had some serious problems in my life and i know that no matter how much a person wants to be liked they couldn't put themselves through that pain (trust me cutting yourself hurts a lot) a great man once said 'i think sometimes you have to sort of die inside in order to rise up from your own ashes'

so next time you go to put the girl with the cuts on her arm down just think about my friend and what she has to go through everyday she doesn't have '2 loving parents, a comfortable and stable home enviroment or friends'.

Emo, short for Emotional. Pretty much your definition right there. A whole bunch of sorrow filled people, who listen to downtrodden music which lyrics usually consist of groans and moans of past relationships that went wrong and they take there pain to the extreme. Typically "cutters" or, people who cut themselves when they are upset to release their emotional pain (which is very unhealthy by the way.) Majority of Emo's are homo/bi-sexual. Usually "Punks" do not get along with them. ("Indie sux, hard-line sux, EMO SUX, you suck!"-Antiflag)
Emo bands include, but are not limited to: my chemical romance, the used, and taking back sunday.

Someone who is white, middle class -in my experience you do not get black emos- and quite intellegent. they have either black or dyed black hair. they come in varying degrees of hardcoreness from area to area; in my area an emo is just someone who is not a chav and not a nerd.

Emos attitude towards chavs: as emos are cleverer than chavs, they tend to treat them as lesser lifeforms.

some Emos also attend the sort of partieis that are thouht to be dodgy.
emos are people who are white, middle class and quite intellegent.
