Okay, so there are two very different definitions for the label 'emo'.

First version (usually used by non-emos): Emos are attention seekers who live regular lives like every other teenager in Britain but cannot handle the strain as well as everyone else. They say that they are individuals, yet listen to ‘emo music’, hang out in ‘emo groups’ and buy ‘emo clothes’ with their pocket money. They hang out in dark rooms generally ignoring the happy things in life and talk about how depressed they are all the time. Most lie about cutting themselves in order for people to feel sorry for them without actually experiencing any pain at all. Others do it as an ‘initiation’ ceremony in order to become fully emo. ‘Cutting’ is a fad – what on earth does it help? You feel sad, so you cut yourself to make you feel… better? They don’t appreciate what they have, and do not realise how bad other peoples' lives are in comparison to their own. Emo is just an ever-increasingly popular ‘group’ which people want to be part of. It is a group for kids without an identity, looking for a bit of melodrama and ‘deeper levels of understanding’. To be honest, the kids who REALLY have a life not worth living aren’t even in the emo club – they just try to get through each day until it gets better.

Second version (usually used by TRUE emos – i.e. those who actually have a reason to be depressed): Kids who have had the misfortune to go through circumstances which are incredibly depressing. For example, parental divorce, death of a loved one, and loneliness. They listen to music which explains how they feel, enjoy hanging around with people who understand how they feel, and buy clothes that express to the world about how they feel. Only some kids cut themselves. Cutting can become addictive, and it distracts from the inner pain. It can be hard when youre labelled in the street because of what you wear, and can sometimes make depression worse. Being a ‘half-emo’ can also mean that you just like black and emo clothes and haircuts, and enjoy gigs and mosh pits. Some people that you like because theyre genuinely nice people, could be emo, and fun to hang around with.

Nearly every single teenager has wanted some form of attention or feeling of belonging at some time or other, and being emo could be the solution to some. Don’t hate people because of what they are labelled. Get to know them – they may be more like you than you think.
Person: 'Hey dude, look over there, some damn emos with their black hoodies and weird hair... jeez man theyre such attention seekers'
Friend: 'Err... you own a black hoodie, and all they've done is grown their hair long, man.'
Person:'Umm... oh be quiet, fool'

Cheerleader:'Oh my god, that girl is like, SOO weird - she is like, always DEPRESSED and shit!'
Friend:'Weren't you crying on the phone to me the other night because your boyfriend dumped you? You seemed pretty depressed then...'
Cheerleader:'Oh shuttup'

People usually become emo when a lot of stress is in their lives. They cut themselves. The most common place they cut themselves is their wrists. It could also be anywhere else though. They find it pleasurable and they think that this physical pain will cover up their emotional pain.

Emo people usually wear black or gray clothing. Skinny jeans, eyeliner, skeletons (not always but mostly)and baggy sweaters are common for the typical emo person.

Their hair is usually black also. Side-bangs that cover most of one side of their face is very common.

An emo person tends to not talk to a lot people. They keep to themselves most of the time and are usually VERY skinny

Jamal: Did you see Jake today at school?
Mariposa: Yea. When he asked me for a piece of gum today, I saw his wrists.
Jamal: What did they look like?
Mariposa: There was blood stains and scars everywhere.
Jamal: O well that's nice *sarcastically*
Mariposa: I think he's emo.
Jamal: No duhhh

A word that people who are snobish and tend to range from jocks to preps enjoy defining, to make them feel superior and important. Said people are incapable of realizeing that they are the ones who created said emo.
jackass: "i define you as an emo therefore you MUST cut yourself, smoke dope, keep a diary, dress like a fag, hide behind your hair, and cry to your my chemical romance CD."

Emo people are very special individuals who aren't afraid to show their emotions, love music and fashion, and hate only the stereotypes they're put under. Very openminded. Undeserving of the stick they recieve. Not necessarily gay or bisexual as so popularly insinuated. Everone is different. Accept it.
These are some beautiful Emo lyrics:
"I watch the seasons pull up its own stage, to catch the last weekend of the week, before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced. Another sunsoaked season has been replaced. You have stolen my heart."
By favourite Emo.. band 'Dashboard Confessional.'

emotive hardcore- what emo stands for. emo is NOT short for emotional. An emo does NOT sit at home all day slitting their wrists. It is a following of emocore, hardcore, or scremo music. derived from the 80's typically there kinda geeky scene kids, but instead of being shallow and self centered they prefere to stick to things that are more important and meaningful.
some one who is emo doesnt care they get shouted at (by chevs) that there odd

The most overused word in the english language.
Person 1: You don't listen to pop? Ewwwww, you're so emo
Person 2: I know dude, c'mon, who DOESN'T want to listen to songs about sex, drugs, smoking, and being violent?
Me: You two need to be put behind bars.

How to be Emo:
- Make a MySpace page, don't put ANYTHING in the 'about me' section except depressed graphics you can find online, and make the background something like bloody roses or just all black. Add a whole bunch of Apps that look evil, even though you know you'll never use them. Don't take any pictures yet, we'll get to that. Put all the other emo kids in your top friends.
- Go to the book store and grab a couple of vampire books, since they're the only thing you'll be reading (that is, if you're FORCED to read).
- Go to the music store and buy a bunch of CDs from My Chemical Romance, The Used, and more. If you need some ideas, go look at the band shirts at Hot Topic (and pick up a couple of those while you're there).
- Now, not ALL 'emo' kids cut themselves, but the true ones do. Because they are emotional (emo) and that's where it comes from. But they are really depressed and messed up. Don't think that you have to cut yourself to be emo. Then again, if you're not depressed, maybe you should go for scene.
- The emo look is something pretty much easy and expensive to pull off. First, only buy your clothes from Hot Topic or any place that has clothes similar to that. Never step foot inside Abercrombie, Hollister, Aeropostale, etc. Buy the band shirts (as stated earlier), a bunch of checkered jackets, and other weird patterned clothes. Your shoes have to be Vans, Converse, or those skinny, checkerboard ones. Speaking of skinny, you have to have a bunch of skinny jeans if you really want to look emo. No boots unless they're spiked, same goes for belts. You have to die your hair at least two different colors, preferably hot pink and black (girls) or red and black (guys). Your hair has to be short and choppy, preferably cut by you. Wear tons of eyeliner, no matter what gender you are (lots of emo people are bisexual, anyways). Some girls like to put bows in their hair and have a bunch of Hello Kitty stuff, it makes you look even more emo, acutally.
- Make your screenname/MySpace display name something with at least four 'x'es in it. Make your statuses and away messages some depressing quote or song lyric.
- Cry.
- Date more than one person at once, preferably one guy and one girl. If they're emo too, they won't care if they're cheated on, because that's one of the reasons they're emo.
- Write sad poetry and songs and sing them to yourself at school and when you're home alone.
- Take a lot of MySpace pictures of you smiling and looking happy (some close-ups, some from weird angles, and don't take a bunch in the bathroom), and one or two of your 'real' face. Make sure the captions are depressing quotes! :)
- Hang out with people, but only in secret. Don't tell everyone what happens in your conversations, and NEVER SAY 'LIKE'. Act normal around your family.
- Make out with someone of the same sex.
- Look down on the populars as they look down on you, and never make eye contact with them.
- Frequently dissappear. Like don't show up at school, or make yourself practically invisible.
- Don't go to dances or parties.
- Make your room painted all black, with pictures of strange things on the wall and candles burning usually.

If you read this whole thing thinking it will help you be emo, then you're a stupid asshole. Emo people create themselves, they don't read GUIDES to be emo!
If you read this for fun, make another one just like it! :) It's fun, trust me.
Well, emo people are like this, but who would actually read these things?

Emo is short for emotive hardcore: a sub-genre of punk that came about in the 1980s. Since the eighties, the meaning has changed a lot.
Many think that emo is just a fashion. It is true that emos have developed their own fashion - skinny/girl's jeans, tight fitting black t-shirts, make-up, and even a hair-style consisting of a long fringe sweeping over one eye and spiky at the back - but this is not what emo is about.
I see emo as a state of mind. Emotional would actually be a good term, as emos are quite emotional, their mood swinging all over the place. This makes it easier to become depressed. EMOS ARE NOT ALWAYS DEPRESSED.

---some say that all emos cut their wrists. This is FAR from the truth. I will not go into why some do. I have never cut my wrist and I don't want to.----

Emos find roots in both goth and punk culture. It is like goth, but goth is darker, and emo is harder to fake. It is a fashion, a type of music, a state of mind and a way of life.

Opposite: Chav
Similar: Goth
Fake emo (poser): Emos are cool. I'm an emo. I don't think this make-up is dark enough, do I look emo enough?

Real emo: I don't think I can live life much longer... (after five minutes) Woo this is great. Life rocks. (gets to school) Oh gawd, I wanna go home. *gets home* Oh, I wanna go to school.
