Let's end the stereotypes about atheists now.
I'm an atheist. Does this mean I love science? Not necessarily. I simply did not feel anything whatsoever going to church when I was little, and therefore, stopped believing. It was when I got older that the "Is realigion really plausible?" thoughts popped into my head.
Does it mean that I have faith in the government? Au contraire--I think the government and politicians and all that junk are mostly corrupt and stupid.
Do I hate other people for believing in God? Nope. In fact, I love diversity. The world would be boring as hell if we were all atheists.
Have I ever gone out of my way to convince a theist that what I believe is right? That's wrong too. I can't tell you for sure whether I'm right or wrong--it's not like a have proof or anything--so I don't bother with arguing over it. Unfortunately, a lot of theists don't pay me the same respect. :(
Am I evil? A theist may think so, but I don't. I love giving to charities, I participate in my school's choir, I love my family, and I don't smoke, drink excessively, or take sex lightly, I've never betrayed anyone, I get good grades, and I'm really nice to others.
I also have faith--not in a God, but in myself and those around me. I believe in living my life as happily as I can, since it is the only life I think I have to live. I don't constantly look to God to pull me through tough times; I pull myself through and make myself stronger.
"It is an interesting and demonstrable fact, that all children are atheists and were religion not inculcated into their minds, they would remain so" ~Ernestine Rose
"Atheism is a non-prophet organization" ~George Carlin
Someone who believes that when we die, nothing happens.
Atheist: When we die, nothing happens.
Non-Atheist: So we don't go to heaven?
Atheist-One who does not believe that God or gods exist. That's it. That's all there is to it. NEVER i mean fucking NEVER judge a whole group of people because of what some of them believe. Yes, some blindly condemn religion. Yes, some are just angry, angst-ridden teens. Yes, some say they don't believe but inside actually do. And yes, some are confused and don't know what to believe, or are just scared to. But some athiests actually CARE about the truth and have done research and personal reflection to come to a personal conclusion based on tons and tons of thought. Also, NEVER assume that you're right! No matter what you believe. Even if someone honestly believe something completely ridiculous to YOU, keep that to YOURSELF. Judging people BEFORE you really know them is parallel to racism, and people can NEVER be judged as a group. Some athiests are conceeded assholes who are so smug cause they believe they're right. But some athiests have considered the possiblities of higher powers and have actually TRIED to believe in greater enlightenment through God. I have my beliefs and that has NOTHING to do with my personality. I can have fun. I can use common sense and rationality. I think about consequences. I think about other people's feelings. I know that my reasons for this disbelief may offend you, so i KNOW that i have to keep them to myself unless asked to say why. People, you have YOUR beliefs of what you think is right. That doesn't mean you have to bring it upon othe...more...
People that judge every Christian based simply off the actions of people like Fred Phelps. To disprove religion, they often say such witty/original things like, "You believe in God? There's about as much proof for him as the Flying Spaghetti Monster." By the way, I was being sarcastic when saying that that was original. It was obviously stolen from The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.
Steve: I'm an Atheist. Therefore, I'm much more intelligent than any Christian.
Doug: I don't know. There are some pretty smart Christians.
Steve: No there aren't. Fuck off.
Someone who believes in no God. Most people really don't care about religious beliefs and don't judge their friends off of them. You know what they say...
Atheist:I don't believe in God
Christian:Oh, that's cool
Atheist:What? Your not going to persecute me for saying that?
Christian:No, not at all. My best argument is this - If YOUR right and IM wrong about God, I lose nothing. However, if IM right and YOUR wrong, well, sucks to be you...
Someone who does not subscribe to any religions and does not believe in any gods or deities.
Strong atheism: Makes a claim that no gods exist.
Weak atheism: Does not make any claim about the existance of gods. Does not believe in gods because there is no evidence for them.
"Hey do you want to go to my church this Sunday?"
"No I am an atheist"
Do you believe in god?
Strong atheist: No, gods are just fairy tales created by man.
Weak atheist: No, there is no evidence for me to justify such a beleif with.
A person who lacks or has an absence of belief in God or gods.
The phrase "There are no atheists in foxholes" isnt an argument against atheists, its an argument against foxholes!
1.) We are just normal people
trying to live our lives.
2.) An atheist, contrary to seemingly popular belief, is a relatively normal person.
The atheist simply believes that there is/are no God/gods. Generally, atheists don't consider themselves to be smarter than all theists. You could say that atheism is taking the Christian practice of not recognizing such beliefs as Paganism one step further in not recognizing any religion. Atheists also tend to be more tolerant, and usually do not proselytize. Atheism is not a "belief," it is a lack of any belief and does not function as a religion would, in that the amount of atheists holds no significance.
The atheist is characterized as explaining that the Big Bang was the beginning of everything around us, but not able to explain how it came about. The Christian is characterized as then pointing out the necessicity of a God for such an act. This is where atheists differ from theists.
Atheists, for the most part, believe that the initial "ingredients" for today's universe have always been present, since it is impossible to create something from nothing. Yes, it is true that no one knows how this came to be, but then again, how can we start to understand something so incredibly complex in its nature when the necessary technology have only just come into exisitence in the last century? It will be an ongoing struggle in the following years to finally understand this phenomenon. We jus...
