There are two kinds of atheism: strong (positive) atheism and weak (negative) atheism. The difference between these two is basically that a weak atheist doesn't believe in God, while a strong atheist believes in no God.
Weak atheism is essentially the same as agnosticism
]. It states that since we have no proof of a God, we cannot know for sure that one exists. Strong atheism states that since we live in a scientific world where the existence of things is determined solely by their observability, we cannot assume anything unobservable to exist. God isn’t observable, therefore he doesn’t exist (cf. Occam’s Razor). This doesn't mean that an atheist wouldn't WANT to believe in God, it merely means that he has no REASON to believe in it/him.
Strong atheists often question the special treatment weak atheists – and theists – give to religion. If they believe that the tooth fairy or Santa Claus do not exist, why are they willing to give God a benefit of the doubt?
Strong atheism is often equated with religion since it takes a strong stance on the issue. This is, however, fallacious. Religion is not based on rationality, and strong atheists value rationality over fantasy. Therefore atheism is not parallel with religion.
I do not follow atheism. I merely concur with it.
The difference between satanism and atheism: Satanism is a religion, Atheism is the lack of religion. It shocks me how so many people on here have mistaken the two. And just because someone is atheist doesn't mean they are so because they believe in science alone.
I am atheist because there are things in the Bible that I don't agree with, such as its take on homosexuality. I also want to be able to read whatever I want, including stuff that may have so-called "witchcraft" in it.
The lack of belief in a God/Goddess/gods. It does not mean that they accept science as a religion, nor does it mean they hate all others. There are prejudiced, racist, asshole atheists just like there are prejudiced, racist, asshole theists.
Christian #1: Hey, did you hear that Bill is an atheist?
Christian #2: Wow, we should all hate him, because atheism is the equivalent of believing in Satan! And Hitler!
Christian #1: No, man. He just doesn't believe in the Bible, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Atheist #1: Hey, did you hear that Joe is a Christian?
Atheist #2: Wow, we should all hate him, because Christianity is the equivalent of stupidity! And not believing any part of science!
Atheist #1: No, man. He just believes in the Bible, and there is nothing wrong with that.
The belief that everything in the universe, all we see and all we have yet to see is the creation (by-product) of random acts of coincidence with foundations solely in pure science and rationale mixed with generous doses of cause and effect and trial and error.
True atheists do not believe in any form of God, or God related creation, including any form of morale standard that would indicate the existence of right versus wrong. Although atheists may one day be able to explain all matters and conditions of the universe, they will never be able to rationalize questions like: Why is there a universe? Why does it go on as it does? or Has it any meaning? (see C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity)
True atheists also agree that belief in pure science and a belief in God cannot be reconciled. Although many of history's greatest scientists (Einstein), inventors (Benjamin Franklin) and mathematicians (Blaise Pascal) were believers in God. See example below.
Einstein is probably the best known and most highly revered scientist of the twentieth century, and is associated with major revolutions in our thinking about time, gravity, and the conversion of matter to energy (E=mc2). Although never coming to belief in a personal God, he recognized the impossibility of a non-created universe. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "Firmly denying atheism, Einstein expressed a belief in "Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the harmony of what exists." This actually motivated his interest in science, as he once remarked to a young physicist: "I want to know how God created this world, I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts, the rest are details." Einstein's famous epithet on the "uncertainty principle" was "God does not play dice" - and to him this was a real statement about a God in whom he believed. A famous saying of his was "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
Atheism is not exactly a religion. It is not synonymous with satanism at all, in fact, atheists reject him as well. Atheists can be crazed and apprehensive a la christian fanatics, but nowhere did I say every atheist can be like that. It's common for them to follow science because it seems more logical to them. The inverse applies to some christians as well. Last, but most important, most atheists ARE NOT EVIL.
Atheist: I'm an atheist.
Crazed Christian: You horrible, horrible scum! You and your demonic kind are killing millions with your atheism lies!
Okay Christian: Calm down. He never hurt anybody. You did. Remember last year at that atheist support festival?
Crazed Christian: (fleeing) You'll all burn forever! Gagh!
*Sigh* Okay, let me get this strait for most of you idiots.
Atheism does not mean you worship Satan.
Atheism means you believe in NO God of ANY type WHATSOEVER.
It is the doctrine or belief that there is no God
Christian: "You don't believe in God, so that means you're an evil Satanist."
Atheist: "No, it means I don't believe in some Jewish zombie that I somehow have to telepathically worship. Atheism means I believe that life came from science."
Rejection of the belief in dieties. Does not assert that there are no dieties and thus does not carry the burden of proof.
Theist: Atheists need proof, so they have to prove that god doesn't exist.
Atheist: Atheism doesn't involve making a claim, I don't have to prove anything.
Either 1) a lack of belief in god/supernatural being due to lack of evidence (weak evidence=agnosticism), or 2) denial of the existance of god/supernatural being. Despite some definitions listed here, atheism does not in its-self attack a single other religion-it is simply a lack of belief in a god. Some might be Satanist-which is by definition not atheism as it requires unfounded faith in a supernatural being ('Satan'); science, in most accepted definitions by scientists, involves testing and falsifying or corroborating of an idea, not stating "fact", and a claim to a supernatural being/god/God is not testable by purely scientific methods.
I agree with atheism because there is no credible evidence for God-only faith in texts that are open to interpretation.
