In Greek and Roman mythology, a nymph is a nature spirit in the guise of an attractive maiden
. Inhabiting forests, fields, caves, mountains, lakes, the sea, nymphs often suffered the attentions of men, notably those of the gods; the free-spirited Daphne
turned herself into a laurel tree to avoid Apollo
's amorous advances.
Today, "nymph(ette)" refers to a sultry
but too-young girl or to a nymphomaniac
, a woman who has an insatiable sexual appetite (i.e., a woman who has the sexual drive of a man).
The nymph Calypso, selfishly thinking of her own desires, kept the miserable, long-suffering Odysseus on her island as a prisoner, hoping to win his love, ignoring that he wanted to return to his family.
A beautiful, seductive, and usually evil female character in drama and literature. She is usually shown as a cruel, man-eating seductress. (Straight) men fall victim to her beauty and are eventually brought to ruin by her. The femme fatale is often a secret agent and/or a spy.
Another word for femme fatale is vamp
; due to the fact that the femme fatale is often a sexual vampire
, the term "vamp" stuck when introduced by the silent movies.
The femme fatale is usually played by a strong mezzo-soprano
and musical theater.
Femme fatales show up often in film noir, James Bond stories, and murder mysteries.
They are often much stronger and more cunning characters than their foils; the often inept damsel in distress
and the sweet, fawn-eyed, but naive ingenue
, this refers to a soprano
or tenor voice type
of a vocal weight
between a lyric voice
and a dramatic voice
, a "light heavyweight
Lyric voices are light, smooth, sweet, and agile
; dramatic voices are heavy, rich
, and full of emotion
"Spinto" is Italian
for "pushed" (this should not imply force) and applied to a tenor or a soprano it means a lyric voice which can be "pushed" to large musical climaxes at moderate intervals. This effect is achieved by a sharp edge in the voice's tone (squillo
), which allows it to "cut" through a full orchestra
(rather than singing over it like a true dramatic voice).
Since spinto voices bridge lyric and dramatic voices, they are able to play a wide range of roles in opera (but a spinto is not a common voice type).
A spinto tenor or spinto soprano may or may not have a darker color than their lyric counterparts; they often have the color of a baritone
and the high tessitura
of a tenor/soprano.
Famous operatic spinto sopranos and spinto tenors include Renata Tebaldi
, Leontyne Price
, Michele Crider
, Aprile Millo
, Renata Scotto

, Rachelle Lampa
, Diana DeGarmo
, Adam Lambert
, Adam Pascal

is a severe eating disorder that afflicts primarily young women, although men are also known to suffer from it.
Anorexia (from the Greek
a- without; and orexis- appetite) is merely a symptom of Anorexia Nervosa in which the victim feels, largely from poor role-models, that they must become bone-thin in order to be considered attractive or to be accepted. From there, they abolutely refuse to eat, for fear of gaining too much weight and then being unable to lose it; they excercise constantly, trying to flush the fat (or lack, thereof, in most cases) from their bodies.
In some extreme cases, a layer of fur will grow on the sufferer's body to keep him/her warm; because they have lost so much body fat, they can no longer insulate themselves.
Many sufferers even hear a voice in their heads telling them how fat they look (despite the obvious fact that they are sickly and wasted away to almost nothing), thus further discouraging them.
, anorexia nervosa and bulimia
are not things that one can "get over". They are illnesses that require help. And poor role-models from the media, from peers, and from parents make the problem worse.
would be anorexic if she were a human... she wouldn't even have the 17 to 22% of body fat required to menstruate
. If she were human, she'd have to be 7'2'', 130 pounds, and 40-18-33. Hell, she'd have to crawl on all fours just to support her unnatural proportions.
Misinformation: Anorexia was the ancient Greek goddess
of withering and starvation.
From the novel and film of the same name, an impossibly difficult choice, especially when forced onto someone. The choice is between two unbearable options, and it's essentially a no-win
"Sophie's Choice" is centered on a scene in Auschwitz
where Sophie has just arrived with her ten-year old son and her seven-year old daughter and a sadistic
doctor, presumably Doctor Mengele
, tells her that she can only bring one of her children; one will be allowed to live while the other is to be killed.
As a mother, Sophie adores both of her children and can't make this agonizing choice... until several soldiers force her and she hastily gives her daughter to them, sobbing as they take her little girl away.

The infamous name of a village in Austria. Visitors from other countries (and especially the English
speakers) are known to get into trouble for stealing the signs (why they try it, I don't know.). The name comes from the name of it's alleged founder, "Focko", and the Germanic suffix "ing" (meaning "people of"). The word has no visible links to the English word, but the locals know by now exactly what it means in English, and are quite embarrassed by it.
Under the town's name is the phrase "Please - Not So Fast!"
Fucking, Austria, conveniently located an hour from the German town of Petting. I recommend going there first.

of people/ animals/ plants that are closely related to each other (first cousins or even closer), thus keeping the genepool

dogs and royalty
are notorious for inbreeding; to keep the line "pure" then they are only allowed to procreate with their "own kind", even when offspring are stupid
or any number of things.Carlos II
was the end result of the Spanish Hapsburg
s; his parents were uncle and niece and both were highly inbred. Carlos was deformed
, delicate, and had an extended infancy
and premature senility
. He was married twice, but he was impotent
and sex was beyond his abilities.
Plants can be inbred
, too; bananas of today are very different from those of three generations ago and often lack the genetic diversity which would keep them healthy
