an asian nation that everyone seemed to trample on throughout history: alexander the great, genghas kahn, the turks, the soviets. the nation finally became independent after soviet collapse, but things got no better. instead, a former communist big shot, a mr. nayazov, took power and created a crazy cult of personality. he recently died, so things are pretty unstable.
in turkmenistan, nayazov's cult of personality forced his picture to be on everything from cereal boxes to watches.

the endless bloodshed for the hutus and tutsis. rwanda is a tiny, destitute nation that is known for extreme poverty and violence. the african nation was colonized by the germans, but after WWI, the belgians were given control. belgian officials played on native quarels and gave the wealthier minority tutsis control over the government. after independence, however, the hutus reaffirmed control until the 1990s. that's when the RFP, a tutsi sponsored militia from uganda, invaded rwanda and civil war broke out. the result was a massive genocide that killed about 1 million tutsis and nearly 500k hutus who did not support the civil war. rwanda has yet to really recover from this.
rwanda is pretty fucked up right now.

2 different countries are named congo.

1) the democratic republic of congo-kishaska is the former zaire. it was once a very poorly run belgian colony. for years, it was a dictatorship under joseph motubo. in the 1990s, the nation was in a constant state of civil war. it is currently under the authority of a transitional gov't.

2) the republic of congo, a country in just as bad of a state as the above. a former french colony, it saw multiple coups until a communist government came to power in the late 1960s. civil war occured in the 1990s, and the country is currently a faux democracy. it is known for its vast jungles with their gorillas.
there are two nations called the congo. interesting enough, the former zaire is officially called congo-kishaska, but it is usually refered to as just 'congo', while the republic of congo is usually refered to as 'congo-braza'
